Ethan just wants to be recognised for who he really is

Ethan realised when he was about 3 or 4 years old that, even though he didn’t know what trans was, he just didn’t feel like he was a girl. And even the support of a loving family couldn’t change the fact that he could face years of discrimination stemming from his birth certificate not reflecting his true gender.

We’ve been working with Ethan and advocates in South Australia to support the passage of legislation to make it easier for trans and gender diverse people to access birth certificates that reflect the gender they live as. Thanks to your support, young people like Ethan will now be able to feel proud to show their high school certificate to their friends and safe to apply for their first job.

However, on the same day as this legislation passed in SA, the Victorian parliament blocked a similar bill to uphold the rights of people like Ethan in Victoria.

This shows that principled advocacy for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people is now more crucial than ever.
