International Mission in Jujuy: eight international civil society organizations will observe possible violations of human rights

From August 22 to 25, 2023, human rights organizations from different countries carried out an independent international mission in the Province of Jujuy in response to the serious news of possible human rights violations within the framework of the recent provincial constitutional reform process.

The mission is made up of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the Inter-American Association for Environmental Defense (AIDA), Bread for the World (PPM), the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Project (Prodesc Mx), the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), Human Rights Law Center (HRLC) Center for the Study of Law, Justice and Society (Dejusticia), Movement Law Lab (MLL).

This visit has the objective of documenting how the state has responded to the protests that various sectors of the population developed against the constitutional reform, approved on June 20, 2023 by the provincial government.

During the week, meetings will be held with different civil society actors, as well as with provincial authorities.

The mission will seek to know first-hand the potential effects on economic, social, cultural and environmental rights, and the rights of indigenous peoples that have been generated by extractivist projects in operation or proposed in the province, which have generated concern and in some cases resistance by the communities in which they are located.

This will make it possible to address the possible excessive use of force, repression and restrictions on the right to social protest.

The International Mission requests the State to provide the guarantees the right to defend human rights, as well as guarantee security and avoid reprisals against persons who provide information to the International Mission.
