Strengthening state and territory human rights laws

The Human Rights Law Centre works with partners to advocate for stronger human rights protections through state and territory human rights acts and charters, and for the introduction of these laws in jurisdictions that do not have them.

In August 2024, we had a significant win when the ACT Government enshrined the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment in the Territory’s Human Rights Act. The new law will help safeguard the environment for future generations by ensuring that this right is at the heart of government decision-making. This is the culmination of our advocacy in support of Canberra-based partners calling for this nation-leading expansion of the Act.
